Sheffield Wednesday's attempts to sign their former loan defender Michael Hector have hit an impasse.

Hector has reportedly been on trial with Wednesday as they run the rule over the free agent, with Darren Moore later revealing that the Jamaican international had been training with the club.

Hector has played just once since November 2021, meaning an extensive period of time was needed to ensure the defender was in the right condition.

However, The Star have revealed that talks have been held between the player and the club, with no sign of an agreement on the horizon.

The report by The Star suggests a deal is not necessarily off the table and could be revisited in the coming days. It has meant, however, that Hector’s trial is effectively on pause and that he has not trained with the club at the back end of this week as the Owls prepare for Saturday’s FA Cup fourth-round clash with Fleetwood Town.

With just days left of the transfer window, it raises questions as to where Wednesday are when it comes to adding to their squad. With Hector being a free agent, he can sign outside of the window, but new recruits are needed.

This comes after both Alex Mighten and Mark McGuinness were recalled by Nottingham Forest and Cardiff City respectively, leaving the Owls light in key areas.

Injuries to George Byers and Reece James have depleted options further, which could have a major impact on Wednesday's title charge.

The Verdict

Wednesday are short of options at centre-back and the delay in bringing in Hector isn't ideal timing.

With plenty of games on the way as the season hits a key point going into February, getting a free agent like Hector up to speed will take time. It's time Wednesday don't have, unfortunately, as they need players available now with their current injury record.

It will be a difficult time for Darren Moore but considering he's managed the situation well so far, with their unbeaten run justifying that, he will most likely find another solution.
