Stats guru @OptaJoe has taken a look at some of the numbers behind Anthony Knockaert, Chris Wood and Dwight Gayle, after the trio were nominated for the Sky Bet Championship’s Player of the Season award.

Brighton and Hove Albion’s Knockaert is shortlisted for the award after helping the Seagulls challenge for promotion, along with Leeds United and Newcastle United’s top scorers, Wood and Gayle.

Opta reveal that Knockaert is the Championship’s leading goalscorer from midfield this season, finding the net of 13 occasions this term, leading Brighton to the brink of the Premier League.

It is also revealed that New Zealand international, Wood, has been involved with 50% of Leeds’ Championship goals this season, having scored 24 and added a further two assists, as the Whites look for a top-fight return for the first time since 2004.

Newcastle spent £10m on bringing Gayle to St James’ Park last summer, with hope the 26-year old would spearhead their promotion challenge.

Gayle has done that, scoring 21 goals in the Championship, which is the best league return of his career, to help Rafa Benitez’s side to the top of the league.
