Swansea City have announced that midfielder Matt Grimes is the new club captain for the 2019/20 campaign, leaving fans of the Welsh club excited.

The midfielder was integral to the Swans last season, scoring twice and providing five assists in 50 appearances on his way to  winning the club’s Player of the Year award.

Mike van der Hoorn led the Championship side for the majority of last season but it appears new boss Steve Cooper believes that Grimes is the right man for the job.

The 24-year-old has spent four years at the Liberty Stadium after arriving from Exeter City in 2015.

The new skipper has previous experience taking the captain’s armband with the England under-20s.

Speaking to the club website, Grimes revealed his delight at taking up the role.

He said: “I am buzzing. It came as a bit of a surprise, to be honest, but I am more than happy to take on the responsibilities and be more of a leader on and off the pitch.

“I am massively honoured. To be captain of any club is a big deal, but to be captain of a club like Swansea City really is a privilege and an honour.

“I think with any younger players at the club, or in the academy, if you are captain of Swansea City you need to be able to show how you should be, how you should be living your life on and off the pitch.”

The Swans begin their Championship campaign against Hull City on Saturday and fans of the club have been quick to throw their support behind the new captain.
