Blackburn Rovers defender Derrick Williams is attracting transfer interest from Major League Soccer, The Sun journalist Alan Nixon has reported.

Williams has been absent from Blackburn's matchday squad for their last four games through injury, and has featured just twice in the league for Rovers since the November international break, when an injury suffered by the defender while playing for the Republic of Ireland allowed Darragh Lenihan and Manchester City loanee Tosin Adarabioyo to establish a strong partnership in Blackburn's backline.

Now it seems as though that has prompted teams from across the pond to try their luck at making a move for the centre back, with Nixon's latest update suggesting that at least one MLS club are keen on bringing Williams to America.

With the MLS transfer window not set to close until the 5th May, there is still plenty of time for one of those sides to secure a deal for Williams, although whether they will actually be able to do so remains to be seen.

There are around 18 months remaining on Williams' current contract with Blackburn, securing his future at the club until the end of next season.

Since joining Blackburn from Bristol City back in the summer of 2016, Williams has made a total of 141 appearances in all competitions for Rovers, scoring five goals, three of which have come this season.

The Verdict

This is an interesting one.

Having fallen down the pecking order at Ewood Park in recent months, it could be argued that Williams may be tempted by a move to America in order to earn more game time.

However, it is hard to see Rovers allowing that to happen, given how short it would leave them in the centre of their defence, with Lenihan, Adarabioyo and the seeming out of favour Charlie Mulgrew the club's only other senior centre backs.

Indeed, with Adarabioyo only on loan at Blackburn until the end of the season, Williams could be tempted to bide his time at Ewood Park for the time being, with the view to coming back into the side when Adarabioyo does return to Manchester City in the summer.
