Aitor Karanka sat in the Sky Sports Studio last night watching on as the side he left earlier in the year battled to a 2-2 draw with West Brom.
They could have won the game and but for a dodgy penalty, would have won the game. They were 2-1 up in the dying stages when a Dwight Gayle tumble drew a spot kick from Lee Mason.
Up until then Forest had always looked like winning the game. Revitalised youngster Ryan Yates earned them an early lead, his rifled effort spinning off Stefan Johansen for the opening goal. Yates then bagged his first senior strike for the Reds to give them a 2-1 lead in the second half.
It was the second game in succession in which the 21-year-old drew plaudits from the pundits. He’s been frozen out for most of the season, unable to get a game under Karanka. That didn’t stop the Spaniard heaping praise on his after the game.
His words have been received rather coldly by the Forest fans. They’ve seen Yates’ potential grow significantly and point to his continued exclusion as one of many reasons why Karanka shouldn’t be in charge of their club and Martin O’Neill is.
Here’s some of the social media observations this morning.
Another man of match for promising #NFFC midfielder Ryan Yates, 21. Credit O'Neill seeing his potential & Keane helping too. Under Karanka didn't play once in League & was to be loaned to L1 Portsmouth. Was given permission to talk to them & went to their game v Sunderland Dec 22

Treated Yates with total lack of respect (like most #NFFC academy talent) and tonight TV pundit Karanka was shown what was under his nose all the time. If Karanka had stayed, Yates would be gone and maybe permanently.

Why didn't Prutton ask Karanka, why if Yates is "brilliant" he never picked him
