Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Lewis Wing made his first-team debut for the Owls on Sunday afternoon against Huddersfield Town.

The 26-year-old signed for Darren Moore's side on a season-long loan deal from Championship side Middlesbrough, and will have been hoping to make a winning start to life at Hillsborough.

But that wasn't the case for Wing, as Sheffield Wednesday crashed out of the Carabao Cup at the First Round stage, after being beaten by Huddersfield Town on penalties, after a 0-0 draw in normal time.

However, there were positives to take for the midfielder, who made a good impression on some of the club's supporters, as well as Yorkshire Live's Dom Howson.

Wing had previously been on the books with Rotherham United on loan during the 2020/21 season, although his efforts weren't quite enough to see them avoid relegation into the third-tier of English football.

The midfielder took to Instagram following his debut for Sheffield Wednesday, and expressed his eagerness to get the League One campaign underway, whilst also labelling the Hillsborough faithful as 'unbelievable'.

Sheffield Wednesday are set to return to action on the opening day of the new League One season, when they take on Charlton Athletic, in what is likely to be a closely-fought battle between both teams at The Valley.

The Verdict:

It was a promising start to his time with Sheffield Wednesday.

Even though the Owls were beaten by Huddersfield Town on penalties, they certainly didn't disgrace themselves by any stretch of the imagination.

When Wing signed for the club on loan, it was a real statement of intent by Darren Moore's side, as they look to win promotion back into the Championship at the first time of asking.

He put in a strong performance against the Terriers in his competitive debut for the Owls, and the club's supporters will be looking to see more of the same from the Middlesbrough loanee this term.
