Yesterday was the 19th anniversary of former Leeds United player Dominic Matteo’s debut for the club, which has excited many Whites fans.

Matteo joined Leeds from Liverpool for £4.25 million ahead of the 2000/01 campaign but had to wait until a Champions League tie against Italian giants AC Milan in mid-September to make his debut.

The Scotsman started on the left-wing for the Whites and helped them to a famous victory at Elland Road, with Lee Bowyer's strike being fumbled into the net by Milan goalkeeper Dida to give the hosts an 89th-minute winner.

That was just the start of sensational European run for Leeds, which saw the Yorkshire club go all the way to the semi-finals before losing to Valencia.

The run included a 1-1 draw against Milan at the San Siro, in which Matteo scored for the Whites.

The Scotland international went on to make 141 appearances across four seasons for the club and was named club captain in August 2002.

He left to join Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 2004.

The 45-year-old sent a message to fans on the 19th anniversary of his debut, which was well received by large parts of the Elland Road faithful.
