Sunderland boss Jack Ross has had welcome news this week in the form of Aiden McGeady’s recovery.

The Republic of Ireland international has been out since June having had a calf injury but is now fit again.

McGeady is still some way off of match sharpness having recently recovered from a three-month problem that has seen him unable to kick a ball this term.

The 32-year-old is back training, and Ross has admitted he is tempted to throw the returning wide man into his side this weekend when they face Burton Albion.

A place on the bench would probably be the best option, but the Sunderland manager didn’t rule out starting the former Preston man this weekend.

With that said, we here at FLW took to Twitter to ask the Sunderland supporters if felt McGeady should start for the Black Cats this weekend against Burton Albion.

In what was a conclusive result, 69 per cent of the Sunderland fans polled believed that the Republic of Ireland winger should be thrown in at the deep end and start tomorrow against the Brewers.

It is a pretty unanimous conclusion from those who took part, and should Ross include him it will be the first competitive outing for the winger in almost four months.

Conversely, 31 per cent of the fans polled felt this weekend would come too soon for McGeady to start after such a long injury lay off.

U23s football might be a better course of action for the next week or so to get the player up to speed before considering him for first-team selection.

With only seven games gone in League One, there is still plenty of time to get McGeady back on the pitch for the first-team, and the lesser majority feel that more time is needed before the winger starts for them.

Time will tell what Ross does, but there is not long to wait until team news is announced ahead of tomorrow afternoon’s clash.
