Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings has paid tribute to the club's goalkeeper Jed Steer after his penalty heroics saw them progress to the Championship play-off final.

Steer has been in great form since being reinstated to Dean Smith's starting XI after being recalled from his loan with Charlton Athletic in January and was certainly the hero on Tuesday night.

Posting alongside a photograph of Steer celebrating on his Instagram story, Mings wrote, "this guy", along with a heart-eyes emoji.

Craig Dawson's first half header swung the momentum firmly in the favour of the Baggies, levelling the scores 2-2 on aggregate but that is how it would remain for 90 minutes.

In the 80th minute, Chris Brunt went flying into a tackle on John McGinn on the edge of the West Brom box, earning him a second-yellow card in the process and making extra-time far easier than it could have been for Smith's side.

And after an uneventful 30 minutes, it was penalties, and with Steer saving from Mason Holgate and Ahmed Hegazi, it eventually fell to Tammy Abraham to seal the win which he did with ease.

The verdict

Steer's journey this season has been thoroughly impressive.

After being sent out on loan and replaced in the summer it would have been very easy for his head to drop but he has shown immense amounts of character to get to where he is.

He is now firmly locked in as their number 1 and rightly so.
