Derby County were unable to secure back-to-back victories on the road for the first time since January 2018, after losing 3-2 to Bristol City on Wednesday night.

The Rams picked up their first away victory in the league since August at the weekend after defeating Swansea City 3-2, and on Wednesday, they would have been looking to build on that win in South Wales.

But Phillip Cocu's side were on the wrong side of a 3-2 result this time around, as they fell to only their second defeat in their last nine league outings.

Nahki Wells scored his first goal for City to fire the Robins into a 1-0 lead on 38 minutes, before Filip Benkovic profited from poor defending and doubled their lead right before the half-time interval.

Famara Diedhiou punished Derby for even more sloppy defending on the hour mark, making it 3-0 to Lee Johnson's side, before Derby staged a mini comeback.

Martyn Waghorn responded for Derby almost immediately, and Chris Martin pulled yet another goal back on 82 minutes after they had a major shout for a penalty waved away by the referee.

In the end, Derby left themselves with too much to do and were unable to complete a remarkable turnaround, with fans left wincing after Benkovic's goal for the hosts.

Benkovic was a reported transfer target for Derby throughout the January transfer window, and was identified as one of Derby's top defensive targets as they looked to bolster their back-line.

But in the latter stages of the window, the Leicester City defender snubbed a move to Pride Park, joining Bristol City on loan until the end of the season, scoring his first goal for the club against the Rams of all teams.
