Blackburn Rovers are one of a number of Championship sides considering a move for Livingston striker Lyndon Dykes, a report from TeamTalk has claimed.

It is thought the Rovers have been joined by Derby, Middlesbrough, Cardiff, Swansea and Bristol City in monitoring the progress of the 24-year-old, ahead of a potential move when the transfer window reopens at the turn of the year.

Livingston are apparently open to selling Dykes in January, despite the fact that he only joined the Scottish Premier League outfit from second-tier side Queen of the South last winter, which could spark something of a bidding war amongst those Championship sides.

So would Dykes be a good signing for Blackburn?

Here, we look at two pros and two cons to that potential move.

Pro: Blackburn could do with another striker

Attack has been much more of an issue for Rovers this season than it has been in previous years.

So far in the current campaign, the club's out and out target men have struggled to make an impact, with Danny Graham and Sam Gallagher netting just one league goal each this season, while Ben Brereton and Dominic Samuel have both spent the vast majority of the campaign on the sidelines through injury.

As a result, adding another attacker such as Dykes to their ranks may not be the worst idea, since it could give them another attacking outlet to help lift some of the pressure of those less physical forward options like Bradley Dack or Adam Armstrong, who are having to do a lot of the leg work upfront this season.

Pro: It would something of a coup

Admittedly, a 24-year-old striker from Livingston may not normally seem like a major signing for a Championship side such as Blackburn, but the circumstances around it could add to the significance of any move.

With a number of other second-tier sides also seemingly interested in Dykes, it could be argued that whichever one of them wins the race to sign the attacker, will not only be strengthening their own squad, but also weakening that of their rivals.

As a result, Blackburn winning the race for Dykes could be one of those small gains that ultimately helps them start to the climb up the table towards a position more like the one they were aiming for at the start of the campaign.

Con: They may need to focus on other areas first

While their attackers may not have exactly been prolific so far this season, Blackburn do at least have plenty of options in that area of the park they can turn to as their individual form fluctuates throughout the campaign.

The same however, cannot exactly be said of their defence, where injuries to the likes of Darragh Lenihan and Greg Cunningham have left Mowbray's men looking particularly threadbare at the back at times this season.

Consequentially, you do have to wonder slightly whether Rovers should be committing too much time and money to adding another attacker to their ranks, when bolstering up their backline is arguably more important, especially considering that appears to be where the club's fans in particular would like to see the focus placed in January.

Con: His goalscoring record isn't great

If, in spite of those issues in defence, Rovers do choose to push on with the recruitment of another attacker, you feel it will have to be one who is likely to get goals for them quickly.

That however, is something that may not be guaranteed for them with Dykes, who, since making his senior debut for Queen of the South in 2016, has gone onto score 27 goals in exactly 150 appearances in all competitions.

That is an average of around one goal in every six games, which isn't exactly the most prolific return, a concern that may only be enhanced by the fact that he is yet to be tested at Championship level either.

It seems therefore, that with the other issues Rovers currently have to deal with, this may not exactly be the most inspiring signing for them right now.
