Sheffield United saw their playoff hopes more or less go up in smoke this weekend as they were soundly beaten by lowly Birmingham City at St Andrews.

The Blades, who have had an excellent first season back in the second tier under Chris Wilder, made a fair few additions in January, but barring Lee Evans, none have gone on to light Bramall Lane up as yet, and there is set to be a big summer ahead for United.

Manager Wilder will be keen to make some new signings and we at FLW think the club could do with looking into the top flight to scout out any potential new recruits, with plenty of players on the books of Premier League clubs who are dying for first team football.

With United needing to add players in numerous positions over the summer, we've taken a look at TWO Premier League stars Sheffield United could look to sign this summer...

Steve Sidwell

The former Reading and Arsenal midfielder is a member of the Brighton squad, but is not someone who sees regular first team football for the Seagulls, and he might well fancy another move to get some first team action under his belt.

No spring chicken at 35, Sidwell is probably past his best in terms of being a Premier League player, however, he could well do an excellent job in the Championship.

When Paul Coutts got injured for the Blades, they suffered, and signing someone with the experience and quality of someone like Sidwell could prove a shrewd move for both the club and player.

Ethan Ampadu

The young Chelsea star is one of the most highly thought of talents in the Premier League, and following a move from Exeter City, he has already begun impressing manager Antonio Conte, making sporadic appearances for the Blues this season.

Ampadu looks to be a player who is going to have a great career, but despite all that potential, regular first team football must come at some point to aid his development.

Sheffield United could do with some more versatility, and seeing how well Chelsea loanee Jamal Blackman has done with the club means the Blades could be tempted to make a raid on Stamford Bridge once again.
