We’re on the brink of a new EFL season once again as Luton take on Middlesbrough on Friday night in the Sky Bet Championship at Kenilworth Road.
Both sides go into this game looking to get themselves an early win under managers that are starting out as senior bosses in the dugout.
Both Graeme Jones and Jonathan Woodgate will want to get off to respective flyers, then, and you can guarantee that the Hatters’ faithful will be in fine voice as they make their return to the second tier.
After a bit of a trouncing at the weekend in a friendly against Norwich, though, Jones will be thinking long and hard about his selection in order to get the club off on the right footing in 2019/20.
He has a few different ways he could line his side up for this one, too, and so we’ve hazarded a guess at a couple of selections he could employ for Friday night.
Certainly, there’s plenty of scope for several different midfield combinations…
Up top, James Collins has been a regular and should play on Friday no matter what whilst alongside him for this one we’ve got George Moncur, who picked some nice passes when coming on against Norwich at the weekend. Callum McManaman has featured off of Collins but if he does feature we think it could be down the flanks.
Midfield is a bit of a lottery with the options the Hatters have, and so Jones could go with one of these selections or several others. Ryan Tunnicliffe, for example, can play across midfield and has done so in pre-season whilst Harry Cornick came on against Norwich and provided a decent outlet – replacing the aforementioned McMananaman.
Defence is a bit easier to pick. Matty Pearson and Sonny Bradley should start in the middle whilst it’s then out of the likes of Martin Crainie, Dan Potts or Brendan Galloway at full-back and Jones might feel as though the experience of Crainie might be ideal to start this one at least.
In goal, record signing Simon Sluga has featured regularly and so should be between the sticks.
