Wigan Athletic started the season on fire, just like the song for their striker Will Grigg suggested.

Grigg, however, has since picked up a long-term injury, as has Michael Jacobs as well as just four points from a possible 21 to see Paul Cook's side drop down the division.

They're currently 16th, although there are only six points between them and the top six and five separating them from the bottom three. It might be a lower-half placing, but there's plenty of factors making it look better.

For instance, they're only a point behind Stoke City, a side with a much bigger budget and they're ahead of Rotherham who also came up from League One.

While their recent form might not be great; overall it has been a decent start to life back in the Championship.

They've had a couple of players shine too, one loan player in particular showing maturity beyond his years. Of course, there's the flip side to that with a couple of flops needing to show more.

FLW looks a two who are hot and two who are not at Wigan Athletic.

Reece James might be 18-years-old, but he's playing with a maturity and calmness beyond his tender age.

He's one of the vast number of players Chelsea have out on loan, and while much higher-profile players are making the Championship their own, Mason Mount, for example, James is putting in steady and assured performances.

They won't have gone unnoticed, that is for sure.

James Vaughan, 30, should be just reaching a peak in his career, experienced enough to read games better and still fit enough to influence them.

Instead, the former Everton man is on the periphery of the first team squad, unable to force regular football and never showing enough in front of goal to make fans think there's more to come.

His career appears to be winding down, despite all that early promise at Goodison Park.

Lee Evans is on loan from Sheffield United, but he's showing exactly why they moved to sign him with some cultured outings in the centre of the park.

Nick Powell catches the headlines with his goals and assists, but Evans does much of the dirty work that rarely gets praised.

With an 80% passing success rate on whoscored.com and 7.03 average rating, he's one of the shining lights for the Latics, even during their recent slump.

Garner did well for Ipswich and Preston, and with a spell at Rangers behind him too, he was expected to bring a glut of goals to the forward line.

He's managed just one in the 4-2 defeat to Sheffield United, but at the moment the striker isn't showing what he is capable of at all.

He was brought in to score goals, but while he's not doing that, he's letting the side down.
