Wigan are leading Preston in the race to sign midfielder Dan Barlaser from Newcastle United, Lancashire Live have reported.

The 22-year-old midfielder has made just three senior appearances for the Magpies - all of which have come in cup competitions - but did impress during a season long loan at another North West side, Accrington Stanley, last year, making 45 appearances and scoring three goals in all competitions to help John Coleman's side secure survival in their first season in the third tier.

Barlaser's performances have clearly caught the attention in that part of the world, with Championship rivals Wigan and Preston now reportedly battling for his signature.

While Newcastle are thought to be keen to offer Barlaser a new deal, with his current set to expire in 12 months time, which could make a loan the more likely option for the midfielder, Wigan are reportedly keen on a permanent move for the 22-year-old.

Although the transfer window being open for nearly three weeks, both Preston and Wigan are yet to complete their first signing of the summer.

The verdict

This could be a good signing for either of these sides.

Barlaser showed plenty of desire and potential at Accrington last season, and is evidently ready for the step up to the Championship.

He may not be quite as regular a feature at either of these two sides immediately, but he would have plenty of chances to develop, and he feels like one to keep an eye on for the future.
