It has been something of an inconsistent start to the Championship season for Blackburn Rovers under new head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson.

After starting the league campaign with three straight wins, the Lancashire club have now lost four of their last five Championship outings.

That is something Tomasson will be keen to rectify quickly, and after what he has seen so far, the Dane will no doubt be forming greater ideas about who he will be relying on going forward this season.

Of course, there are some players who will benefit more from that than others, and with that in mind, we've taken a look at one winner and one loser at Blackburn since the start of the campaign.

Winner: Ben Brereton-Diaz

For all the speculation surrounding his future during the summer transfer window, Ben Brereton-Diaz remains a Blackburn Rovers player, and his response to the situation can only have done him good.

After his excellent 2021/22 campaign, the 23-year-old has started this season in impressive form as well, with four, very well taken goals in the Championship already for Tomasson side, something that will no doubt keep potential suitors interested, opening the door for a move to the top-flight in the future.

His attitude and application in continuing to play so impressively is also likely to win him admirers both within and outside the club, meaning the past month or so does look to have gone very well for the Chile international from an indiviual perspective.

Loser: Joe Rankin-Costello

Having missed much of last season through a battle for fitness and place in the pecking order, Rankin-Costello has made just one league appearance this season at right-back, and it did not go well.

The 23-year-old was substituted at half time during that outing - the 1-0 defeat to Stoke - and since then, Tomasson has favoured using Lewis Travis, who is more naturally a central midfielder, on the right of defence with Callum Brittain out through injury.

With Tomasson subsequently admitting that it will be hard for Rankin-Costello to get game time after a deadline loan move fell through, the player's future at Ewood Park does appear bleak, despite having two years remaining on his Rovers contract.
