Perhaps more than other, today signalled the true start of Rafa Benitez's Newcastle United tenure.

Despite taking over back in March, the Spaniard appeared to be fighting a losing battle, with a team compiled under a flawed regime and a rather comical predecessor.

Though the former Liverpool and Chelsea coach had quite the impact on Tyneside during his fire-fighting mission, it was today where he would truly stamp his authority on the Toon Army.

The first arrival of his time in charge was sealed earlier this morning, with Belgian 'stopper Matz Sels arriving from Gent.

Considering the fact the Magpies shelled out over £5m to bring him in, it is fair to say the 24-year old's landing was largely unheralded.

However, reports from Sky Sports suggest that the 56-year old is on the verge of wrapping up a mammoth double deal.

They claim that Crystal Palace forward Dwight Gayle is on his way to the North East in order to seal a move from the Eagles, as Benitez bids to draft in more firepower.

While the former Peterborough ace is a far cry from the likes of Saido Berahino and Alexandre Lacazette, who they were linked with merely a few months ago, Newcastle are simply no longer dealing with Premier League style money.

So, on the first major transfer related day of his tenure, here's how Twitter reacted.

Are these the sort of signings to win Newcastle the league?Â
