After joining Charlton on loan from Chelsea in the summer, Conor Gallagher exploded onto the scene in the Championship.

With six goals to his name by January, he had forced himself to the forefront of everyone's conscience.

So when he was recalled by the Blues and sent to Swansea, there was plenty of shock and disgruntlement around the club.

But can they adapt?

In this six pointer we take a look at his replacements and what Bowyer will do for the remainder of the campaign...

What do you think the overriding emotion was at the club when Gallagher was recalled?

"Shock and anger I imagine.

"Gallagher was doing brilliantly with Charlton and was playing week in week out. They must have been wondering what else Chelsea want.

"Sending him to Swansea will have been the final kicker as well. Yes they are higher in the league, but is it a move that is really going to benefit him a lot more? Probably not."

Who is going to be asked to step up to the plate?

"Whilst Gallagher did a good job defensively, there is no doubt that he stood out most when bursting forward from midfield.

"Therefore it is likely that the likes of Jonny Williams and Erhun Oztumer are going to have a lot more pressure on themselves to start providing at the top end of the pitch.

"Pressure could also land on Chuks Aneke. Like Gallagher he showed flashes of that midfield instinct, in terms of how to arrive in the box at the right time, and that could be key."

Are the replacements long-term?

"Almost definitely not.

"Matt Smith has come in on loan from Manchester City after failing to land a regular spot at Queens Park Rangers whilst David Davis arrives having fallen down Birmingham's pecking order.

"It is hard to believe that the new owners do not have loftier long-term ambitions."

QUIZ: Are these 15 ex-Charlton players still playing – yes or no?

How well will they fill Gallagher's shoes?

"As alluded to above, I am not sure that the new replacements have been brought in to do the exact same job as Gallagher.

"If you look at the two types of player Smith and Davis are, it is much more likely that they have been signed to add some more energy and some more solidity to the middle of the park.

"A lot of pressure has been on Cullen to do the former and Pratley to do the latter so far so if that work load can be lightened on both it will help."

Have the club done enough in replacing him?

"I think they have.

"The only things that can scupper their plans are long term injuries to the likes of Williams or Oztumer. There may be a small shift in style to the one seen during Gallagher's time but I don't think it will be to their detriment."

Will Gallagher's departure be fatal for their survival chances?

"No. It would not say much about Bowyer as a coach if it was anyway.

"He had a big influence on the side but he has dealt with these losses before. You look at Karlan Grant, Joe Aribo, Jed Steer and Patrick Bauer. He has managed to replace them all.

"You have to trust Bowyer to work his magic."
