Watford captain Troy Deeney has delivered some harsh criticism of Cardiff City's style of play following the Bluebirds' 1-0 victory at Vicarage Road.

Kieffer Moore's first half strike was enough for Cardiff to take all three points back to Wales, and Hornets fans are growing impatient with manager Vladimir Ivic after they struggled to break down a resolute defence once again.

It was a far cry from the week before, where they slammed Preston North End 4-1 at home, which was their best performance going forward for a while.

But like many of their games this season, Watford seemed pretty toothless in attack yesterday, which was a surprise considering Deeney, Joao Pedro and Ismaila Sarr were all on the pitch.

Deeney though was critical of how Neil Harris' men played, also offering a few words of back-handed praise.

"I thought we got old-manned and by that I mean there were old professionals going down, making it difficult and being horrible to play against," Deeney told the Hertfordshire Mercury.

"It was a proper Championship 1-0 away win so if you're that team you're very happy with that.

"If you to continue to lose these sorts of games you're going to be in a very difficult place moving forward.

"They weren't great but they knew what they came here for and they did it very well.

"We'll play that game probably 10 more times this season so we have to learn to fix it up, with the battles first and the quality will show after."

The Verdict

Labelling Cardiff as 'not great' and 'old professionals' is probably doing them a disservice considering three of their starting 11 were 23 and under.

Deeney does offer some reasonable points though, as Harris has made a habit of being defensively solid away from home and Watford just couldn't break them down.

It's interesting to see that Deeney also had a little dig at many other Championship teams by saying Watford would play in a similar game '10 mire times this season', which is something the Hornets need to get to grips with if they want to regain their Premier League place.
