The Sunday Mirror (page 73,) reported at the weekend that Southampton are among the clubs looking to make a late move for Watford striker Troy Deeney with the transfer deadline approaching on Friday evening.

The striker has been linked away earlier on in this transfer window but remains at Vicarage Road but for how much longer remains to be seen.

Indeed, he's not yet started a game for the Hornets in their Championship campaign and only came on as a sub in the clash with Luton Town, suggesting that the men from Hertfordshire are looking at life without him or have at least been planning for it should he end up leaving this week.

Is it likely to happen?

There seems a chance that he could move away from Watford for sure.

He's in the last year of his contract, as per Hertfordshire Live, and is one of the highest earners at the club so the view is Watford might be open to getting him off of the wage bill and reinvesting it elsewhere - the report refers to the fact they'd like two more signings before the deadline.

Indeed, it has been apparent that Watford are open to letting him move on if the deal is right for them and Deeney might also feel now is a good time to try something new after spending the best years of his career so far at the club.

Southampton, then, are among the gaggle interested but it remains to be seen if they are the side that gets him.

It seems possible that he'll move, it's just where he ends up that could be harder to predict, but the Saints are looking keen.

Do Portsmouth and Southampton have these 10 things in common?
