Aston Villa are set to be boosted by the return of a number of players this evening, when they welcome Reading to Villa Park in the Sky Bet Championship.
A report in the Birmingham Mail has provided some team news ahead of Reading’s visit to Villa Park, with Glenn Whelan, Neil Taylor and Birkir Bjarnason all set to be back in contention for Steve Bruce’s side.
Whelan and Taylor shook off injuries over the international break, but were held back on Saturday, whilst Bruce rested Bjarnason due to his involvement for Iceland.
After missing Saturday’s goalless draw with Hull City at the KCOM Stadium, the trio will be in contention this evening, as Villa go in search of their first victory in three against Reading.
Defeats against Queens Park Rangers and Bolton Wanderers prior to the international break had dented Villa’s automatic promotion hopes, with Bruce’s side unable to return to winning ways in Hull over the weekend.
The Villans enter tonight’s clash with Reading in fourth, but are now 10 points behind Cardiff City, who have strengthened their grip on the second automatic promotion spot over the Easter weekend.
It has been a tough run for Villa in the Championship, with this evening’s clash with Reading a quick turnaround from Saturday night’s draw at Hull.
Fresh legs will be required within Villa’s starting XI, and having more bodies returning to contention is a big plus.
Whelan and Bjarnason both offer an alternative to Mile Jedinak in central midfield, whilst Taylor is natural competition for Alan Hutton at right-back.
