Steve McClaren should move fast to secure the signing of Youness Mokhtar. The Moroccan winger is understood to be on the way out of PEC Zwolle after deciding not to renew his contract which expires this summer. Consequently, he will be available on a free transfer.

The 26-year-old has just had his most impressive season to date. In his 32 league appearances, he notched up eight goals and five assists as Zwolle just missed out on the Eredivisie’s European competition play-offs. It made him the club’s joint most productive player in front of goal last season alongside Mustafa Saymak. This return was the reward for changing his style of play. He became more involved in play, taking on more players, shooting more often, and completing more key passes than in previous years.

This energy and dynamism would bring an added threat to most attacks. For QPR, this would add an extra dimension to an attack that was too one dimensional to push up the table. They relied heavily on aerial threats, as evidenced by Matt Smith’s prominence in the side. Bringing in a player like Mokhtar would not take away from that threat, but give opposition defences more to think about.

Such a season will naturally bring a flurry of potential suitors. It must be considered unlikely that such an in-form player available on a free transfer will remain unattached for any length of time. If QPR are to lure Mokhtar to west London, they will need to act fast.
