Chelsea's on-loan Huddersfield Town midfielder Trevoh Chalobah has spoken out on his time with the Terriers, reflecting on the change the club have gone through this season, while also looking ahead to the remainder of the season at the John Smith's Stadium.

Chalobah, who also spent last season on-loan in the Championship with Ipswich as the Tractor Boys suffered relegation to League One, joined the Terriers on a season-long loan back in the summer transfer window.

The 20-year-old midfielder has so far made 30 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring once, during his time with Huddersfield, who are currently 18th in the Championship table, three points clear of the relegation zone.

Speaking in a catch-up interview on parent club Chelsea's official website, Chalobah was asked about his reasons for picking Huddersfield as his preferred destination for this season, with the midfielder explaining: "Out of all the teams, Huddersfield wanted me more. They showed more interest and not just that, they wanted to develop me as well.

"They could see my qualities from last season and wanted me to bring it to them this season."

Chalobah's time with Huddersfield would take an early twist when Jan Siewert, the manager who had brought him to the John Smith's Stadium, was sacked after just three games of the league campaign, and replaced by Danny Cowley.

Reflecting on how that change impacted on his time at the club, Chalobah was keen to praise his current manager, as he revealed: "It was a bit nervous for me because he (Siewert) was obviously the one that brought me in. He was the one who wanted me, to help me and work with me, but it’s football and it happens. It was a shock but we just had to move on.

"I feel like the manager now has really helped me a lot. I played against him and Lincoln with Chelsea in the Checkatrade Trophy and he said he remembered me from that game.

"I remember it was a really tough game and what they had in that team – resilience, hard work, grit - they’ve brought to Huddersfield."

Assessing his hopes for the rest of the campaign, Chalobah is confident that his side can avoid relegation to League One this season, as he continued: "Hopefully we get the last nine games played and our target is just staying in the division, getting as many points as we can get and keep this club up. I believe we’re more than capable of that with the team we have."

However, it seems as though Chalobah is fully focused on a career with Chelsea in the long-term, as when asked about the footsteps of some of his old youth teammates he is following in by moving on loan to the Championship before breaking into Chelsea's first-team this season, the midfielder added: "If I do well myself, then hopefully next season I can join those boys I’ve grown up with as well."

The Verdict

It certainly seems as though all parties have benefitted from this move.

For Chalobah himself, the experience of regular football again this season will only aid his development, particularly considering he has become something of a key figure in the centre of the park for Huddersfield.

Indeed, that is something the Terriers themselves will have reaped the rewards of, given the influence Chalobah has had in helping them keep their heads above water in the battle to avoid relegation so far this season.

However, it does seem as though they are facing the prospect of having to do without him next season, with Chalobah seemingly keen to make his mark at Stamford Bridge, which can certainly understand, especially when you look at the success the likes of Tammy Abraham, Fikayo Tomori, Mason Mount and Reece James have all enjoyed for Chelsea's first-team this season.
