From the highs of a top six finish, to the lows of a manager change and mid table obscurity, long-suffering Owls fans have been through it all recently.

In the 1980's their side was a staple of top-flight football, appearing in cup finals and classed as part of the established order in England's elite division.

Now, they languish in the Championship, no closer to a Premier League return than when they first slipped out the division in 2000.

There will be a generation of football fans who know them as nothing more than a second tier side, yo-yoing occasionally into the third tier and back.

That is a travesty that needs putting right and surely, fans at Hillsborough yearn for a return to past glories. In order to facilitate any rise, they need an improvement in the playing squad, a slight rebuild and stronger contingency against the crippling injury crisis that dogged this campaign.

With that in mind, we've selected three players they need to be on red alert for, ready to pounce and help make the fans' dream a reality once more.

I've seen Baker linked with the club today and he is just what they need right now. If Gary Hooper regains fitness and Jordan Rhodes isn't moved on, they have strikers who can score, but just haven't been doing for a range of reasons.

With some real guile and tenacity in the centre of the park, maybe they could spark those forwards into life, especially Rhodes who should bring you 20 goals every season. Baker has international honours and would only be available on loan, but he could be a key component in a promotion push.

Graham might not be a name you're familiar with, but he's the forgotten man at Molineux after suffering a cruciate ligament injury. He's out of contract this season and unlikely to be offered a new one. Wednesday should be on red alert.

We're focusing on the lack of supply into the forwards, there's no point in adding firepower to a side with Rhodes, Hooper and Forestieri amongst others. They need bullets to fire and maybe Graham can find them. Maybe not, but if he's free he'd be worth a short. After all, if he does come good there's a chance of a return on the investment and once upon a time, this boy was threatening big things.

Onuoha might not be cheap, but he's a seasoned centre half who offers something Wednesday might be lacking going into the summer. They've got several defenders out of contract and a reshuffle at the back wouldn't do them any harm after an average season.

Onuoha might be looking for a move back up north and he's out of contract at QPR. He's a commanding presence and a big game player and Wednesday need both if they're going to build on this season.
