Michael Beale has revealed that Rangers are no closer to signing their targets this window, suggesting their move could be off for Swansea City winger Morgan Whittaker.

Whittaker has been subject to interest from Rangers for almost the entire transfer window, with several bids reportedly being rejected. Their most recent bid was in the region of £2m which was turned down by the Welsh side.

This comes after Whittaker was recalled from his impressive loan spell at Plymouth Argyle at the start of the month, and he's yet to feature for the Swans since then.

The lack of game time has been a huge hint to the future of the attacker, as players are unable to play for more than two clubs this season and with the player already plying his trade for during the first half of the campaign, any hopes of him making the switch to Ibrox would have been dashed if he had played for the Welsh outfit this month.

However, the transfer saga surrounding Whittaker seemingly ended when Beale all but confirmed the move was off.  Speaking to the Daily Record, Beale responded when asked about their pursuit of Whittaker: "He will be staying at Swansea I believe."

With a move away from Swansea now unlikely, it will give Russell Martin the chance to plan for the rest of the season. With Michael Obafemi departing the Welsh side, it leaves a slot open in the squad for Whittaker to fill.

The Verdict

It's good news for Swansea and Martin who can seemingly get going when it comes to planning the squad.

Not being able to use Whittaker, with a view to selling him has been a strange move considering he was one of, if not the best performer in League One up until his recall.

Hopefully Whittaker can hit the ground running and rekindle the form he showed in Devon. Having not played for almost a month, it might take a while to get up to speed.
