Newcastle United forward Dwight Gayle and Tottenham Hotspur winger Jack Clarke are two players that Yorkshire Live journalist Nathan Hemmingham hasn't heard are on Sheffield United's shortlist at this stage.

32-year-old Gayle may not be in Eddie Howe's plans at Newcastle for next season with the striker only making eight Premier League appearances for the Magpies last term.

Callum Wilson and Chris Wood are currently ahead of him in the pecking order and another forward could arrive at St James' Park between now and the end of the summer window to provide more competition in this department.

The Blades aren't alone in their potential quest to recruit the Englishman with Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion also being linked with him this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur's Clarke, meanwhile, is being pursued by former loan club Sunderland who are keen to secure a fresh agreement for his services after seeing him make a real impact at the Stadium of Light towards the latter stages of his spell on Wearside.

He's unlikely to be in Antonio Conte's first team next season, though they may not sanction another loan agreement considering his contract in the English capital expires next summer.

The duo may not be on their radar though, with Yorkshire Live reporter Hemmingham saying: "They (Gayle and Clarke) are not names I am hearing being talked about here."

The Verdict:

Clarke would probably thrive if he was on the wing, so this is a signing that would make little sense if Paul Heckingbottom is going to play three at the back with no advanced wingers.

The 21-year-old is a promising player still and could be available for a cut-price fee - but he isn't anywhere near the finished package yet and could easily fall out of the starting lineup if he fails to perform well.

Gayle, on the other hand, has proven himself to be an accomplished player at this level and with the Blades needing another goalscorer with Oli McBurnie failing to get in and amongst the goals, an agreement for the Newcastle forward would be ideal.

However, whether they would be able to compete with Boro to secure his services remains to be seen - because Chris Wilder's side could have more financial power after they sell Djed Spence.

Moving quickly to secure an agreement could be key because of Spence's potentially imminent sale, though they shouldn't be prepared to pay over the odds to bring him to Bramall Lane.
