Barnsley appear set to seal a deal for Forest Green Rovers defender Liam Kitching, with Football Insider reporting that the player is set to undergo a medical at Oakwell after a fee was agreed between the two clubs.
The 21-year-old former Leeds United academy player has been in fine form for the Green Devils this season after arriving at the club back in July 2019, making 17 appearances for the League Two outfit across all competitions this term.
It is said in the report that a three and a half year deal has been agreed between the Tykes and the centre back, paving the way for the signing to be completed in the next few days.
Kitching hasn’t featured for the New Lawn outfit since early December, perhaps suggesting that a move could be imminent for the talented defender after Barnsley made their interest known last month.
16 questions about Valerian Ismael that Barnsley fans may struggle to get correct – Can you get full marks?
Also capable of playing at left back if needed, the youngster previously spent time on loan at Harrogate Town in what was his first taste of senior football.
This appears to be another interesting bit of business from Barnsley as they once again look to bring in a young player from the lower reaches of the Football League.
It is a great transfer strategy to have and if said player proves to be a success for the Tykes they can always sell them on for a profit.
Kitching has played a vital role in getting Forest Green into promotion contention this term and without doubt will bring an abundance of talent to Oakwell if this deal gets over the line.
I am looking forward to seeing how this young defender fits into Valérien Ismaël’s plans going forwards.
