Charlton play-off hero is set to turn down Rangers and several other interested clubs in order to extend his stay at The Valley.

The 26-year-old skipper enjoyed a fantastic campaign for Lee Bowyer's men and capped it off by scoring a dramatic winner in the play-off final against Sunderland at Wembley to secure a return to the second tier for the Addicks.

Incredibly, that was his only goal of the season, which came with virtually the last kick of the campaign.

And, with his contract up in the summer, Bauer's long-term future had been unknown until now.

However, Football Insider are reporting that despite interest from Steven Gerrard's side, who will be playing in Europe next season, as well as Hull, Preston and Blackburn among others, the centre-back will sign a new deal with Charlton.

That will be a massive boost for Bowyer who is also battling to keep other out of contract stars, including midfielder Joe Aribo.

It will also give the player a chance to enjoy his summer now that his future will be sorted as he prepares to come back as a Championship player.

The Verdict

This is fantastic news for Charlton because the ex-Maritimo man is a vital player in Bowyer's side and also a real leader in the group.

He has made himself even more of a fans favourite after that goal too, so this is going to be very welcome news for all connected to the club.

It's a blow for Rangers who need defensive reinforcements but Gerrard will have other targets in mind.
