Sheffield Wednesday are thought to have turned down a £3m bid for keeper Keiren Westwood from Premier League Cardiff City in the summer.

The Ireland international has been controversially frozen out at Hillsborough since Jos Luhukay took over, with many fans struggling to grasp why a proven stopper is on the bench.

Westwood was initially injured when the new manager came in, however, he has been fit since pre-season yet Luhukay has opted to go with Cameron Dawson, who has been criticised by a section of fans.

That has led to theories suggesting a clause in the keepers contract may be triggered if he plays again for the Owls.

However, Sheffield Star columnist Alan Biggs has made a very interesting reveal today, mentioning the rejected bid from the Bluebirds and adding that Wednesday wanted double the £3m offered:

"Sources outside Hillsborough have suggested for some time that a Premier League club (Cardiff) tabled around £3m for frozen-out goalkeeper Westwood last summer.

"Wednesday are said to have asked for up to £6m. Plainly hugely unrealistic if they did."

The high-earner is out of contract at the end of the season, although he could still move on in January if a suitable bid comes in.

The Verdict

If true, this would be insane from Wednesday on an ageing keeper who they clearly didn't want to use anyway.

It appears his wages are a big problem at the moment so they should've accepted £3m without hesitation if they knew he wasn't going to be played.

Now, he could well carry on not featuring until the summer of 2019 with the Owls paying him when he will then leave on a free.
