Premier League outfit Crystal Palace look set to activate the £8 million release clause in winger Andros Townsend’s contract this summer, with Newcastle United powerless to stop the England man departing St. James’ Park.
According to The Mirror, the 24-year-old has been identified by former Newcastle boss Alan Pardew as a man to revive the Eagles’ fortunes following a difficult second half of the 2015/16 campaign.
Townsend only arrived at the Magpies in January but the club’s relegation means that the books will need to be balanced and the former Spurs man could make a quick return to the capital.
Despite the club’s relegation, Townsend was one of the Magpies’ better performers during the second half of the campaign and his form saw him called into the initial 26-man England squad for Euro 2016, although he was later cut from the final traveling party.
Newcastle were relegated from the Premier League last season and a squad rebuilding process will be overseen by boss Rafa Benitez during the summer, with Townsend seemingly one of the first who will depart the club.
Newcastle United fans, how good was Townsend towards the end of last season? Should the club try and offer him a new deal?
