Fresh off the back of winning promotion to League One, there will be only one name on Tranmere fans’ lips going into the summer.

James Norwood has been nothing short of influential for Micky Mellon’s promotion-winning side this season, just one year after firing them into the Football League with promotion from the National League.

The 28-year-old, perhaps unsurprisingly, won the Sky Bet League Two Player of the Season this term, having scored 32 goals in a total of 53 games and ending up as the leading goalscorer in the EFL.

But, what turned out to be a magnificent end to the season for Tranmere could be about to end in bitter disappointment, with Ipswich Town reportedly agreeing a deal to sign the prolific forward on a free transfer this summer.

So, with Norwood on the brink of leaving Prenton Park, there is a need for Mellon to replace his star-man up top, and the fact that he would be leaving on a free transfer makes his job even harder.

Nevertheless, latest reports claim that Tranmere are looking at signing Callum Lang and Danny Rowe this summer, from Wigan Athletic and AFC Fylde respectively.

The latter has been remarkable in the National League over the last few years, scoring 27 goals in 48 games this season, and 28 goals in 50 games the season before that.

An out-and-out physical striker, Rowe more than deserves his chance to make the step-up up to the Football League, and on a free transfer, he’d be a massive bargain.

Lang, meanwhile, flourished on loan in League Two with Oldham Athletic last term, scoring 15 goals and producing two assists in all competitions for the Latics.

The 20-year-old has proven himself in League Two, and has shown real signs that he can do it in League One, and the Liverpudlian would be a shrewd signing for Rovers.

Able to play either down the middle or on the wing, he would be an excellent addition to an attack that will need strengthening if and when Norwood departs.

Losing Norwood would clearly be a massive blow for Tranmere, but replacing him with two proven forwards in their respective divisions would more than soften the blow.
