Sky Bet League One side Tranmere Rovers and League Two Bradford are interested in signing free-agent James Vaughan, according to reliable journalist Alan Nixon.

The 30-year-old finds himself on the lookout for a new club heading into the 2019/20 campaign, having been recently let go by Wigan Athletic following the expiry of his contract at the DW Stadium.

The experienced front-man spent last season on loan with Portsmouth, but failed to find the back of the net in a total of 11 outings for Kenny 2Jackett's side, having scored just six goals in 39 games before his move to Fratton Park.

But it is now believed that both Tranmere and Bradford are interested in signing Vaughan on a free transfer.

Nixon originally tweeted Blackpool were interested, but that was evidently a mistake.

Tranmere will be looking to replace James Norwood this summer, who, after scoring 32 goals for Micky Mellon's side last season, moved to Ipswich Town on a free transfer a fortnight ago.

The Verdict

Vaughan has endured a couple of really tough years, and he needs to find a place to settle down and recapture his form from previous years.

He was tremendous for Bury in League One and rightfully earned a move to Sunderland, but a torrid spell at the Stadium of Light kickstarted a rocky couple of seasons for the forward.

He will score goals given regular game-time and a full pre-season under his belt, in my view, and he would be a very good signing for either Tranmere or Bradford.

Location wise, both clubs are perfect for him too, so it will be interesting to see who wins the race for him this summer.
