He moved back to Prenton Park in 2011 and took over as caretaker manager towards the end of last season after Ronnie Moore’s departure from Rovers.

Manager Rob Edwards said, “I have been very impressed with John’s hard work and his coaching ability. We wish him well in his next job.”

Tranmere chief executive Jeremy Butler added, “Rob Edwards wants to make a change in his coaching department and that has led to us holding talks with John about his future.”

“John is now looking for a new challenge and leaves this club with our gratitude for his efforts in his two spells at Prenton Park.”

“We wish John luck and fully expect to see him land a good job in the very near future.”
