Tottenham Hotspur will not rush into signing Jack Grealish this summer, with Aston Villa playing hardball over the midfielder’s price.

According to a report from the Mirror (18/06, 16:01), Spurs still have an interest in Grealish, but will not be rushing their pursuit of the 22-year-old this summer and may even wait until the end of June to make their move.

Villa, who are known to be struggling financially, are holding out for £40m for Grealish this summer, as they look to balance the books at Villa Park.

James Maddison’s imminent £25m switch to Leicester City has given Villa confidence that they can recoup their valuation of Grealish this summer.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a good year in the Championship under Steve Bruce, with his form during the second-half of the season vital, as Villa challenged for promotion.

Over the course of the 2017/18 campaign, Grealish made 30 appearances in the Championship, scoring three goals and registering a further six assists.

Grealish helped lead Villa to fourth in the Championship, but was unable to help his boyhood club over the line in their quest for promotion.

Villa lost the play-off final 1-0 to Fulham, leaving Steve Bruce’s side facing a third consecutive year in the Championship.

The Verdict

Spurs will know that Villa are struggling financially and will look to exploit that this summer.

Villa will be lucky to get £40m for Grealish’s service, and should Spurs make a move, they are likely to enter the bidding considerably lower than that.

Depending on Villa’s financial situation, they might be tempted to sell at a cut-price, despite sticking to their valuation so far.
