Tottenham Hotspur defender Danny Rose has been told to not go through with a loan switch to Championship side Middlesbrough by former striker Darren Bent, as quoted by Football Insider.

The same outlet recently reported that Boro are interested in getting a loan deal sorted for Rose with it currently looking as though he is well out of the picture under current Spurs boss Jose Mourinho.

Certainly, it would be an eye-catching arrival for Boro given Rose's CV and Neil Warnock would surely earn praise for getting such a deal over the line.

Darren Bent, though, thinks Rose needs to be careful about making such a move and suggested that he'd perhaps be better off going elsewhere in the Championship if he does decide to drop down a division.

He said:

“When you drop down to the Championship to get game time that’s all well and good and I totally understand that.

“What you don’t want to do is go down to the Championship to get game time and you get stuck at a team that’s not doing very well because you’re going to start getting labelled as a Championship player.

“You’ve dropped down, you’ve not really made a difference and then you have to fight tooth and nail to get an opportunity back in the Premier League.

“For Danny Rose, he needs to be playing games, yes, but it’s got to be the right club in the right situation.

“Middlesbrough are a big club but at the same time, I wouldn’t say they’re pulling up any trees at the minute.

“I’m not quite sure Middlesbrough would be the right fit but it comes down also to how desperate he is to play football. Is he desperate?”

The Verdict

Of course, Neil Warnock will argue that Boro are going to be challenging the likes of Brentford and Bournemouth for promotion this season, or so he'll hope, and that would come as a counter-argument to what Bent has to say.

In the end, it will all come down to what Rose wants to do as he looks to earn more football than he is set to get at Spurs this season and if Boro, he feels, is the best option then he should follow that path.
