After narrowly avoiding relegation in their previous campaign, Aston Villa were keen to push on up the table during the 2015/16 season.

Tim Sherwood took over from Paul Lambert midway through that previous season, piecing together an impressive run that saw them steer clear of seemingly certain relegation to a 17th place finish.

Having been given the job permanently that following summer, Sherwood was intent on bringing in a host of impressive new faces in order to ensure an improvement.

Just shy of £60million was spent of new arrivals that summer with the likes of Jordan Ayew, Adama Traore, Joleon Lescott and Scott Sinclair all arriving at Villa Park.

One arrival flew under the radar slightly, but still set the club back nearly £8million.

This is FLW Rewind, where we take a look back at a big decision made by a club, analyse the initial reaction and document what happens next.

The man in question this time was Blackburn Rovers striker Rudy Gestede who arrived at the end of July.

Having just netted 20 goals for an average Rovers side in the Championship, it was a signing that largely pleased the fans:

However, their faith was greatly misplaced.

Whilst the Benin international undoubtedly tried his best, he was part of a Villa squad incapable of creating chances or scoring goals.

It makes the five he did get that season all the more impressive, but there is no doubt that he had fallen short of the hopes these fans had.

Only four more goals followed the following season in the Championship before he jumped ship to Premier League Middlesbrough.
