Former Chelsea and Aston Villa defender John Terry has spoken of his ambition to be a manager amid reports linking him with the vacant post at Villa Park, reports Sky Sports News.

The 37-year-old recently closed the curtains on his playing career, where he most recently captained Villa to the Championship play-off final last term.

And the defender, who made over 750 career appearances, has been a name linked with the vacant managerial role at Villa Park, following Steve Bruce’s sacking last week.

Terry had also looked set to become assistant manager at Villa Park to other linked names such as Thierry Henry and Rui Faria, who have both rejected approaches from the West Midlands club despite being strongly linked with the job.

Despite not wanting to speak too much about the rumours linking him with a move to Villa, Terry did admit to Sky Sports News that going into management has been “an ambition of his for long, long time”.

“I have ambitions and aspirations to go and be a coach or a manager in the long run but I am taking time to reflect, which is the most important thing for me after recently coming to the decision to retire”, Terry said.

“I am ready for the next chapter in my life and hopefully it brings at least half the success I had as a player”, he added.

Villa have been in dismal form of late on the pitch, and sit 15th in the Championship table having won just one of their last ten league outings.

The Verdict

This is once again another interesting development regarding the Villa job.

Terry has no experience of being a manager but knows exactly what the club is all about, and you only have to look the job his former Chelsea team-mate Frank Lampard has done thus far at Derby County - perhaps experience isn’t everything.
