Leeds United midfielder Mateusz Klich has revealed that the opening day victory over Stoke City was the moment the players knew they could be a force this season.

The Whites have enjoyed a fantastic start to the campaign and currently lead the way. As well as that, they have attracted plenty of plaudits for the fast, attacking football they have shown under Marcelo Bielsa.

One of the key men this season has been Polish midfielder Klich. He has been a revelation under the Argentinian after a tough first season in England that saw him shipped out on loan after just six months.

Given the major changes that took place over the summer, the Whites were a real unknown quantity before a ball was kicked.

However, after stressing what a tough pre-season they had to endure, Klich revealed to the Telegraph that the players knew after the impressive first win over the Potters that they were the real deal.

"Pre-season was so hard, so much running, so much work in the gym and then tactical shape every afternoon. We were exhausted. I was so tired."

"I don’t think we knew how good we could be. That changed against Stoke on the opening day. They had just come down from the Premier League and we played so well to beat them."

The Verdict

This is very honest from Klich and it shows how footballers have doubts themselves ahead of a new season and how much confidence a win can give you.

Obviously, Bielsa deserves huge credit too. His detailed pre-season has paid off at this stage of the season, with the players performing how he would've hoped overall.

Klich has been a massive beneficiary from his arrival and now it's about maintaining those standards across the campaign.
