Attempting to win promotion back to the Premier League on their second time of asking, West Brom will be striving for success under Steve Bruce this upcoming Championship campaign.

The Baggies, who were unable to capitalise on a good start to last season, eventually finished 10th place, eight points shy of the play-off places.

One player that Bruce is considering at The Hawthorns is Blackburn Rovers defender Darragh Lenihan, who enjoyed a mightily impressive campaign with the Lancashire outfit.

Assessing West Brom's interest in the Irishman, and detailing where the priorities lie this summer, Carlton Palmer told Football League World: "Well, he's certainly a top drawer defender in that league and he's a good player.

"But, I think, if I'm right, West Brom had one of the best defensive records in the league last season, I think they kept 19clean sheets.

"Their problem was, even from under Ismael, was they didn't take their chances, the y created a host of chances and didn't take them.

"But the championship is a tough, uncompromising league so you will pick up injuries and you will pick up suspensions and you need a squad and I think that's what Steve's trying to do."

The verdict

As teams have found in previous years, a starting XI can not take you to the promised land that is the Premier League, therefore, this would be an excellent addition to bolster squad depth and competition for places.

Lenihan has proven that he can be a top performer at the top end of the division, and should they go on and secure his signature, then it would certainly represent excellent business.

A defender who is dominant in the air and difficult to beat on the floor, he reads the game very well and would slot in very well at Albion.

Improving on the ball too, Lenihan is a trusted player in possession and can start attacks with his precise passing.
