Jake Taylor made eight appearances for Reading last season.

10) Jake Taylor

After making his Reading debut against Northampton Town in the League Cup in 2010, Jake Taylor has had to wait a while before playing a bigger role at the Madejski Stadium. The 22 year-old has had to build up his first-team experience during various loan spells in Leagues One and Two.

He experienced his largest amount of first-team football whilst with Paul Tisdale's Exeter side. The young attacking midfielder played 30 times but could not prevent the Grecians from relegation to League Two in 2011/12.

After another year away from the Royals, Taylor eventually was called into the Reading first-team squad for the end of the most recent season. He made a big impression in a 3-1 win over Doncaster where created the goal which turned the game in Reading's favour. In just one game, Taylor had saved his Reading career, earning a new contract with Nigel Adkins' side.

This season the challenge is for Taylor to push on and establish himself at first-team level in the Championship. With Reading's transfer activity restricted after a protracted takeover saga, the early weeks of the season will allow Taylor his best opportunity to stake a claim for a starting spot at the Madejski Stadium.

Jordan Bowery netted the winner as Oxford beat Portsmouth 1-0 yesterday
Bowery couldn't quite cut it with Villa.

9) Jordan Bowery

After being one of the few bright spots of Chesterfield's 2011/12 campaign which ended in relegation from League One, Jordan Bowery earned himself a move to Aston Villa. The 23 year-old struggled to get into the first-team at Villa Park, making 19 appearances in three seasons with the Premier League side.

Bowery did however make a quiet impact at Doncaster Rovers during a month-long loan spell last season. The striker's pace formed a promising partnership with Chris Brown in attack. However the forward was recalled by Villa before he could score for Doncaster in the Championship.

Bowery arrives at Rotherham as the club's record signing, the challenge now is to justify that price tag. The youngster has shown promise over the past few seasons but he needs to add goals to his game. Steve Evans can be an uncompromising manager in the way he builds his squad, one bad performance will get you dropped.

However there's plenty of untapped potential in Bowery and he could be an inspired signing for Rotherham this season and help the Millers through a difficult campaign.

8) James Tarkowski

After a breaking into the Oldham first team a few years ago, James Tarkowski struggled with the rigours of being a centre-back at professional level. However the appointment of Lee Johnson as Latics boss completely revolutionised Tarkowski's career.

Within a few months he had developed into a modern centre-back, capable of being strong in the air, in the tackle and with his distribution. The 21 year-old attracted interest from the Championship before Brentford won the race for his signature in January.

Tarkowski made 13 appearances, scoring two goals, helping Brentford secure a long-awaited return to the second tier. The defender is now expected to push on from last season's promise and become a key performer at Championship level.

With Bees boss Mark Warburton putting faith in talent from the lower leagues in building his team for the new season, it will be interesting to see whether the Londoners can make an impression at a higher level. Which ever way the season pans out at Griffin Park, Tarkowski will start out as one of the first names on the team sheet.

Mings could be first-choice at left-back next season with Ipswich.

7) Tyrone Mings

Mings has attracted headlines recently for his random acts of kindness over Twitter. After handing out free tickets to a hard-up fan, Mings dipped into his pocket to replace shirts that Ipswich fans had bought before his number had been switched. However the young defender could soon be making the headlines for his performances on the pitch.

The 21 year-old was released by Southampton at the age of 16 due to budget cut-backs. The defender slowly rebuilt his career in non-league, first with Yate Town and then with Chippenham, before Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy brought him to Ipswich.

Although a centre-back by trade, Mings has been converted to left-back by McCarthy over the past few seasons. In contrast to previous first-choice Aaron Cresswell, Mings is a more defensively-minded option at full-back. He fits into Mick McCarthy's identity of building teams around their defence.

After the sale of Aaron Cresswell to West Ham this summer, this season could be Mings' chance t make the step-up to first-choice left-back. Doing so will not be easy, the Tractor Boys have signed Norwegian international left-back Jonathan Parr. However Mings has shown that he is willing to take on challenges in his career, he could figure heavily in any success that Ipswich have this coming season.

Newton_2983304
Newton has been impressive with St Mirren for the past few seasons.

6) Conor Newton

In the week before the League One play-off final Rotherham announced the signing of Newcastle academy graduate Conor Newton. The timing of the signing was intriguing but it showed the confidence that Steve Evans had that Newton was good enough to play at Championship level already.

The 22 year-old midfielder has never played first-team football in England before. However two loan spells with St Mirren gave Newton some all-important senior experience. The Newcastle-born player had attracted interest from Celtic before agreeing to join Rotherham earlier this summer.

Newton is a versatile player, capable of operating as an attacking or deep-lying central midfielder as well as on the right or even at right full-back. With Rotherham boasting a wealth of midfield options including Ben Pringle, Robert Milsom and Lee Frecklington, this versatility could allow Newton to play a key role with the Millers this season.

The 22 year-old has also started pre-season in great form, including a wonder-goal in a friendly game against Falkirk. Newton is a big talent that Rotherham have managed to snap up on a free, expect him to make an impact this coming season.

Veldwijk hit 30 league goals in the Dutch second-tier last season.
Veldwijk hit 30 league goals in the Dutch second-tier last season.

5) Lars Veldwijk

Nottingham Forest have never been short on strikers in recent seasons, so much so that they've been able to let David McGoldrick and Ishmael Miller leave without too much of a wince. After being linked with adding some more illustrious strikers to their books this summer, Forest boss signed both Matty Fryatt and the Dutch striker Lars Veldwijk.

Although not well known in England, Veldwijk has been deadly in the Dutch second-tier with Dordrecht and Excelsior in the past two seasons. Last year saw the Dutchman hit 30 goals in just 38 appearances and he could be a real wild-card with Forest this coming season.

Standing at 6 ft 5, Veldwijk has a real nuisance factor about him which will trouble even the best defences in the division. It will be a transition though for the Dutchman, there are endless examples of players unable to repeat form in the Dutch leagues abroad. However Forest have a potential star in the making should they be able to utilise Veldwijk's potential.

Guðmundsson returns to England with Charlton.
Guðmundsson returns to England with Charlton.

4) Johann Guðmundsson

Johann Guðmundsson was once on the books of both Fulham and Chelsea before returning to his native Iceland in his early years as a footballer. The Iceland international has since made his name with AZ Alkmaar in Holland over the past five years.

Guðmundsson is best known though for his hat-trick for the Iceland national team which secured a dramatic 4-4 draw with Switzerland in World Cup qualifying and earned them a play-off spot. However by-and-large the winger has struggled to be a regular source of goals in his career.

However the 23 year-old is an awkward customer for opponents, at 6 ft 1 he offers presence playing in his preferred position as a winger. Guðmundsson is also able to operate as a striker, giving Charlton boss Bob Peeters some options in what looks like a thin Addicks squad.

A return to England this summer could help the Icelander could work out well for the Icelander, playing in a league which values pace and physicality over technical skill could allow Guðmundsson to demonstrate his abilities in a more appropriate setting.

Woodrow broke into the Fulham first-team last season
Woodrow broke into the Fulham first-team last season.

3) Cauley Woodrow

It's fair to say that Fulham used quite a few players in an ill-fated campaign last season, many of them failed to make much of an impression to the Craven Cottage faithful. After the illustrious signing of Greek international Kostas Mitroglou, it was a surprise for many that Cottagers boss Felix Magath chose young Cauley Woodrow over his more expensive counterpart.

The 19 year-old's only previous first-team experience had been a non-descript spell with Southend in League Two where he managed two goals in 18 appearances. However he proved to be a useful option in the Premier League for Felix Magath's side, Woodrow ended last season with one goal in six appearances.

With Fulham making the expensive signing of Ross McCormack this summer, the challenge for Woodrow will be to first find himself a place in the starting line-up. Manager Felix Magath had a reputation in Germany for operating with bloated squad sizes, he will often drop players after a bad game and never play them again.

However Magath has shown that he is willing to put faith in youth, Cauley Woodrow is one of the best of a promising batch of youngsters at Craven Cottage. He could be key in returning the club to the Premier League this season.

Huws is well regarded at Manchester City.

2) Emyr Huws

Emyr Huws is in effect the successor to Nick Powell at the DW Stadium this year. Both are attacking midfielders and both are on the books at one of the big Manchester clubs. With Powell returning to Old Trafford this summer in an attempt to earn a place in Louis van Gaal's team, Manchester City have allowed their young Welsh midfielder Emyr Huws to make that short journey to Wigan.

The Welshman first gained first-team experience in Aidy Boothroyd's Northampton Town side two seasons ago. After returning to Manchester City, making a few appearances in cup competitions, Huws ended last season with Birmingham City.

The 20 year-old was one of the few bright spots in what was a poor end to last season at St Andrews. The highlight of his spell with the Blues was a wonder-goal against Middlesbrough which won the club's goal of the season contest.

Huws also made his debut with the Wales national team, playing a key role in a 3-1 win over Iceland. Many see him as being able to reach the level of fellow Welshman Aaron Ramsey. This season could be important in establishing the youngster as a star player for years to come.

Lolley has joined Scunthorpe
Lolley was playing village football two years ago.

1) Joe Lolley

The story of Joe Lolley is one of a meteoric rise, after being released by Birmingham City at age 16, the forward dropped down into the tenth tier of football with Littleton before catching the eye of Conference side Kidderminster. Lolley developed rapidly with the Harriers, scoring nine goals in 21 appearances and helping the club to the fourth round of the FA Cup.

After attracting attention from most of the clubs in the Football League, Lolley eventually signed for Huddersfield Town. A lack of fitness restricted the 21 year-old to just six appearances towards the end of last season. However he made a big impact in the Terriers' final day victory over Watford wherein he managed a goal and two assists.

With a full pre-season under his belt, Lolley could be one of the stars of the forthcoming season in the Championship. With Huddersfield boasting a talented midfield with Olly Norwood, Adam Clayton, Danny Ward and Adam Hammill options, Lolley will enjoy great service as well as competition for places. Should Lolley re-produce his performance from the last day of last season over the course of next season, Huddersfield could be a real surprise package this season.
