Sunderland are seemingly wasting no time in their efforts to appoint Jack Ross' successor after they parted company with the former St Mirren boss earlier this week.

One man that has registered his interest (according to Chronicle Live) in being appointed as their new manager is Kevin Phillips, which is a name that is certain to raise debate amongst the club's supporters.

Football League World's Sunderland fan pundit Charlie Hodgson insists that it wouldn't be a suitable time for his side to appoint Phillips, who remains as fan's favourite at the Stadium of Light.

"With Kevin Phillips its weird one, as I would love to see him as Sunderland manager at some point, but I don’t think its the right time now.

"At the moment I think we need someone who has had promotion from League One and plays football that will excite the fans and hopefully keep them on his side for the long run."

The regular punter was also quick to admit that Phillips' lack of managerial experience will be a concern if he was appointed, and labelled it as 'too much of a risk'.

"However with Phillips we don’t know what we are going to get given that he’s never had a job in management before. For me its not the right time for him as it would be too much of a risk."

The Black Cats will be targeting promotion from League One once again, after they were beaten in the play-off final by Charlton Athletic at Wembley.

Sunderland are next in action after the international break, when they travel to Adams Park to take on Wycombe Wanderers, where supporters will be hoping to see a new manager in the dugout.
