After a bitterly disappointing 2015/16 campaign, Aston Villa were preparing for life in the Championship following their relegation from the Premier League.

As expected, there were plenty of incomings and outgoings as manager Roberto Di Matteo began to overhaul his squad ready for life in the second tier, with deadwood having to be moved on following a torrid season before.

The likes of Charles N'Zogbia and Kieran Richardson were all let go by the West Midlands side with plenty of Villa fans thanking God that they had departed the club, however one player who was sent away with the best of wishes was midfielder Idrissa Gueye.

Initially, fans were sad to see the energetic midfielder leave, but it was to be expected really. The 29-year old had been the diamond amongst the rubble for Villa in the previous season, and his form for the club hadn't gone unnoticed, with Europa League chasing Everton securing his services for a reported fee of £7.1million.

Gueye has been a revelation at Goodison Park ever since his move from Villa. The midfielder is still a regular for Marco Silva's men, and in the most recent transfer window, he was linked with a big-money move to European giants Paris Saint-Germain, before the Toffees rejected a £26.2million bid for the player.

With those type of fees being brandished about, Villa fans will have been praying that the club managed to include a few sell-on clauses in Gueye's departure, but nevertheless, he is a player that has become a top Premier League midfielder, and fans were right to assume that he'd go to the top...
