Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed that Craig Gardner has been appointed as a coach at the club, with Tony Pulis making his first move to reshape the backroom staff at Hillsborough.

With Garry Monk sacked heading into the international break, Pulis is getting to work this week at SW6, with his appointment coming in time for this weekend's clash with Preston North End.

After a couple of days on the training ground, Pulis has bolstered his backroom staff by appointing Gardner.

Quiz: Did these 17 Sheffield Wednesday players ever actually score a league goal for the club?

The club have confirmed the 33-year-old's arrival over on Twitter, just days after the former midfielder left Birmingham City.

Gardner had been serving as Aitor Karanka's assistant at St Andrew's, having taken over a First Team Coach role in the Second City back in July.

However, he departed St Andrew's earlier in the week and is now quickly back in a role across the Championship with Sheffield Wednesday.

Gardner joins Pulis in linking up with a Sheffield Wednesday squad battling for a path back up the Championship table.

They currently sit 23rd in the division, having peeled themselves off the foot of the table in Monk's final two fixtures in-charge.

The Verdict

Gardner isn't long out of the playing side of the game and you usually find that coaches of his ilk are decent options to have kicking around.

Pulis will be a good figure for him to learn off from a personal point of view and, in truth, the challenge at Wednesday is an exciting one.

Things are well placed for Pulis to lead them back from the brink and being part of that would be big for Gardner.
