Dimitrios Konstantopoulos has signed a one-year contract extension with Boro.

The Greek goalkeeper has been at the club for five years and has been one of the stalwarts since he joined.

However, he rarely plays now due to being 39-years-old and acts as back up to Darren Randolph.

His time at the club has been successful because in consecutive seasons they reached the Championship play-off final and then got promoted to the Premier League. However, Boro's stay in the top division only lasted one season.

Pulis had this to say about the goalkeeper in his pre-match press conference: "I think he's done a good job behind the scenes."

"The squad is not the 11 players who turn up, you need other players outside of that and they're almost just as important."

"They've got to accept the disappointment of not playing regularly and still give everything when they train. I've always had good people around whether they're in the team or not."

The Verdict

Konstantopoulos appears to be the ideal squad player based on Pulis' comments. Having someone who is willing to work hard and help the team even though they don't play is a vital asset, so Boro were right to offer him a contract extension.

He is unlikely to play, but it does allow him to finish his career with some additional success and his last season could be part of a team playing in the Premier League.

One of the advantages that Boro have on the teams around them is the depth to their squad, and this helps prove that.
