Middlesbrough manager Tony Pulis has admitted that players could be allowed to move on this January, but insisted he has a duty to look after the club in terms of not taking big gambles on potential replacements.

Speaking to the Hartlepool Mail, Pulis commented that while he is open to players leaving, he has to ask himself if he can bring in better to replace any outgoings.

"The most important thing is can we bring better players in if they leave? We want to make the squad better and bring in the players we need.” Pulis said.

The likes of Grant Leadbitter and Rudy Gestede are expected to be targets for Championship clubs, while Ashley Fletcher is also attracting interest from others in the division.

But Pulis is well aware of his responsibilities at the club, and praised Chairman Steve Gibson for his input into the club over the years.

“It’s astonishing what Steve Gibson has put in over the years, it really is and I have a responsibility when I leave to ensure the club is in good shape" added Pulis.

Middlesbrough have seen their hopes of automatic promotion dashed this term somewhat, with a run of inconsistent results leading to a top six finish looking the most likely at the moment for Pulis' men.

There is of course plenty of time remaining in the season, and Boro fans will no doubt be hoping for a few solid January additions and a big run in the second half of the campaign.
