Tony Pulis issues his verdict on crucial Barnsley clash tomorrow

Tony Pulis has used his pre-match press conference to eliminate any complacency that might have crept in to the dressing room.

Middlesbrough play Barnsley next at the Riverside Stadium with three points a must from this game.

The Tykes find themselves 21st with only two points separating them from the drop, so they will be desperate to come away with some points.

The recent win against Birmingham saw Boro move up into the play-off spots, but the tight gaps separating teams around there means they can’t afford any silly slip ups especially against teams in the lower half of the table.

In his pre-match press conference, he was quick to point out that Saturday will be a test for his side: “Saturday’s game will be a tough one. I’ve watched Barnsley a bit recently and they’ve been unlucky recently with some of their results.”

“It’s important that everyone turns up, fans and the players, and we need to be on it because we won’t get what we want. They’re not going to rollover and it’ll be a tough game for us.”

He also used the opportunity to praise Patrick Bamford who has scored five goals in his last four games: “Things are dropping for Patrick. When I first came in, the chances were dropping for him but they weren’t coming off for him and now they are. Whenever he’s in front of goal it’s as though he can’t miss. We just need the rest of the strikers to do the same as him.”

The Verdict

Pulis is creating the right kind of mentality for a play-off run because he is ensuring that every game is seen as a challenge which his players have to overcome. This shows the managerial experience he possesses because he understands what is needed to get promoted.

It’s nice to see Bamford get recognition as well because he has been a standout performer for the club in the past few weeks with his goals directly earning the club four points.
