Tony Pulis issues comment on Middlesbrough’s shock League Cup defeat

Tony Pulis was left disappointed with his side after their League Cup exit on Tuesday evening.

Burton Albion secured passage into the semi-final of the competition for the first time at the expense of Middlesbrough thanks to a Jake Hesketh strike on 48 minutes to settle the tie.

Pulis felt after the game that his side were nervy and urged his men to “show character” in the wake of the defeat.

A win would have seen Boro progress to the last four of the League Cup for the first time since lifting the trophy in 2004.

Instead, defeat leaves them with no wins in five in all competitions – and with just three wins during that run.

When speaking to the assembled press after the game, reported via Teeside Live, Pulis spoke on the defeat.

“I’m desperately disappointed and the players are as well,” Pulis said.

“I thought we played well in the first half. They started better than us in the first five minutes but then we settled and got a good grip of the game.

“And we’ve had four opportunities, again, where we’re through with just the keeper in front of us. We’ve had three shots on target and the one that Martin [Braithwaite] pulls back across goal for Jordan [Hugill], somehow, we don’t put the ball in the back of the net.

“What summed it up was Flinty’s [Aiden Flint] miss in the second half, how he’s missed that goodness knows.

“They’re chances and opportunities that again are coming our way and we’re not putting them away. The 10 minutes at the start of the second half were shocking, we were so sloppy.

“People can look at things but it’s a culmination of people being sloppy. We were really comfortable and I thought we did well in the first half.

“I wanted more of the same but we wanted to take that opportunity. But we were really sloppy.”

Pulis added, when speaking to the club’s official media: “They’re really disappointed in there and everyone else will be, but we’ve got to show some character now.

“The team looked nervy, and we’ve had a couple of moments of madness in the second half.”

The verdict

It was a desperate night for Middlesbrough who let a golden chance slip through their fingers.

Rarely does a Championship or lower league side get to contest a quarter-final – let alone a semi-final – so this is certainly a missed opportunity for the Riverside club.

What makes it more distressing is the fact it, by and large, it was a relatively strong Boro line-up that took on Burton Albion.

It was a poor showing and an even worse result for Tony Pulis – which extends the run without a win in all competitions to five.

And the defeat is not the ideal preparation for the visit to the Madejski Stadium to take on struggling Reading this weekend.
