Middlesbrough boss Tony Pulis called for calm even though his side went top of the league after a hard-fought victory at Sheffield Wednesday last night.

The Teesside outfit looked strong and well organised in the first-half but despite their control they struggled to create clear chances.

That changed after the break though, with quickfire goals from Mo Besic and Britt Assombalonga giving the visitors a two-goal lead.

A wonderful Adam Reach strike set up a nervy finish and Boro survived an incredible goalmouth scramble to take the points in the last minute of added on time.

It means Pulis' men are top but the experienced boss wasn't getting too excited when speaking to the BBC.

"Now we've just got to stay level, keep calm and remain competitive. We've won a game of football, that's all. People get too carried away when you win and too carried away when you lose."

Boro are likely to drop off top spot when the rest of the Championship play later today but it's a great start to a busy week for the side.

They will look to build momentum with two home games in the next seven days against Rotherham and Derby.

The Verdict

Whilst it was a great win for Boro last night, Pulis' message is spot on and it's far too early to get carried away.

He knows just how long and tough a Championship season is and he will be telling his players every day to ensure standards don't drop.

However, it's nice for everyone connected to Boro to see the side top but the challenge will be to build on this win with two home games coming up.
