Sunderland have beaten off a host of Championship competition to secure a deal to bring Joe Gelhardt from Leeds United to the Stadium of Light.

Indeed, the Black Cats have this afternoon confirmed that the 20-year-old has joined the club on loan for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.

Gelhardt's name has been linked with a multitude of Championship clubs this month, but this week, it appeared the race was down to four clubs - Sunderland, Blackburn, Middlesbrough and Wigan Athletic.

Speaking as part of the statement that confirmed Gelhardt's arrival, Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray called the addition an exciting signing.

“It is no secret that Joe had plenty of options on the table this month, so it is a testament to the Club and its staff that he felt Sunderland was the best move for him." Mowbray told Sunderland club media.

"He has made an impact at Premier League level throughout the past 18 months and he is a really exciting signing, who fits our playing style and will complement a forward line that is already packed with talent.

"I’m sure the fans can’t wait to see him in action and we are looking forward to supporting his development.”

The Verdict

Although Leeds very much see Gelhardt as part of their long-term future, with minutes not available at Elland Road, a loan deal made sense this January.

And, what a brilliant signing this is for Sunderland.

Having lost Ellis Simms following his Everton return, the Black Cats really needed to add firepower this month and in landing Gelhardt they have certainly done that.

Beating off so many clubs to his signature speaks volumes about the club and their ambitions and I do think it's a good move for Gelhardt.

That's because not only should it ensure he gets plenty of game time, the club are also chasing down a play-off place so he has something to really compete for.

It's going to be really exciting to see how the 20-year-old gets on in the coming weeks and months.
