Blackburn Rovers have enjoyed a really positive September, with Mowbray's side claiming back to back victories at home to Millwall and away to Reading last weekend, while they have also added to the quality and competition in their squad with the addition of midfielder Lewis Holtby.

Rovers' back to back Championship victories means that they have now won four of their last six matches, which has pushed Mowbray's side up to 10th place in the table, and will have Blackburn supporters feeling that they can mount a play-off challenge this campaign.

A victory against Luton Town on Saturday at Ewood Park would secure Rovers their highest points tally at this stage in the Championship season since they suffered relegation from the Premier League in 2012, and would highlight the progress that has already been made from last season's mid-table finish in their first campaign back in the English second tier.

The addition of Holtby on a free transfer has offered even more reason for optimism at Ewood Park, with the 29-year-old able to add some real technical quality to Rovers' already strong looking midfield options, and highlights that Mowbray is aiming to improve the expectations set on the season.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's clash against Luton to the Lancashire Telegraph, Mowbray suggested their could be further additions to his squad in January to help Rovers' top six push, saying: "The idea is to progress from last season, middle of the table with 60 points.

"Where are we aiming this year? Definitely in the 70 points, hopefully further, but let’s wait and see.

"We’re looking for progression and a mentality that we believe we’re going to be stronger this year and as the windows come, as I’ve said you judge if off transfer windows, we can try and strengthen again."

The Verdict

Mowbray certainly sounds like a manager who has real belief in his squad and their capabilities this season, often you see managers attempting to dampen expectations of their supporters when their side makes a positive start to the season, but the former Middlesbrough manager is clearly wanting to drive his team forward to achieve more than they did last term.

His is probably right to assume that come the January transfer window if Blackburn are in a position where they are in and around the top six, then their owners are likely to back Mowbray in the transfer market and allow him to bring in extra quality to make the difference between finishing inside the play-offs or just falling short.

It will be interesting to see whether Rovers can sustain their strong recent form, and how they would respond if their recent run did come to an end with a defeat, Mowbray though, certainly has the belief his side can respond in the right fashion to any setback.
